On October 3, 2007, Schattdecor's plant safety concept was faced with its first serious test when a transformer substation fire caused a power outage in Thansau I, part of the company's decor paper printing plant in southern Germany. Schattdecor's multi-stage safety system responded so well that production downtime was kept to an minimum.
The power outage, which took place in the late afternoon of a public holiday, caused an abrupt standstill at the eight printing presses in the Thansau I section of the plant, where work was continuing despite the public holiday because of full order books. Thansau II, which is equipped with five printing presses, was able to continue work as usual, however, as it has a separate power supply system. Accordingly, jobs involving tight delivery deadlines were quickly re-routed to Thansau II to ensure delivery the next day, as required.
In a swift and collegial gesture, a diesel-powered emergency backup generator was placed at Schattdecor's disposal by the nearby Rohrdorf Cement Works. Thanks also to an additional generator provided by the power utility Eon BAYERN, Thansau I was able to resume production more or less as usual four hours later. The incident impressively demonstrated the commitment and professionalism of Schattdecor's service and workshop team, which had been fully trained for such occasions.
Following a night shift on the part of the electricians, Thansau I was able to switch back to mains operation 48 hours after the power outage had occurred.
The last stage in the company's safety concept also proved its worth in true 'Made by Schattdecor' manner, with production workers finding nothing of putting in an extra Saturday shift to make up for the loss in output caused by the power failure.
